PlayStation Ends Twitter/X Integration, Citing API Changes

Sony’s PlayStation consoles will no longer support Twitter/X integration, including the ability to view and post content, trophies, and other gameplay-related activities on PS5/PS4, effective November 13, 2023. The announcement was made on Sony’s website, stating that the integration with X (formerly known as Twitter) will no longer function on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 consoles.

The move comes after Elon Musk‘s X, the social network formerly called Twitter, started charging companies for access to its application programming interface (API), which appears to be the most likely reason for the cut-off.

Sony’s decision to disable X/Twitter on PS consoles follows Microsoft’s Xbox, which cut off the ability to share content to X in April, and Blizzard’s “World of Warcraft,” which dropped in-game Twitter integration in February 2023. Twitter announced in February 2023 that it would begin charging developers a monthly fee to let their apps access its API, with Musk claiming that the social network’s “free API is being abused right now by bot scammers & opinion manipulators.

Sony Interactive Entertainment representatives did not respond to a request for comment about why PlayStation is cutting off X. However, the move is expected to affect the gaming experience of many users who have been using Twitter/X integration on their PS5/PS4 consoles. The cut-off will prevent users from accessing content published on X on PS5/PS4 and posting and viewing content, trophies, and other gameplay-related activities on X directly from PS5/PS4 or linking an X account to do so.
